Chapter Eight
âWe will be fine,â Gunther said, swinging his gun in the direction of the howling.
âMaybe,â Colly said. âBut how are we going to get across the river?â
Jaz peered into the night, her heart thudding. The trees were thicker here and taller, blocking out much of the moonlight reflecting off the snow. She knew from the map that this must be the Little Keele River and that there was a shelter around here somewhere. That is, unless Colly had taken them off track.
Woooo! Woooo!
The wolves were joining in a chorus. What if they came after them? Her head said that wasnât likely. Wolves didnât chase people. But then again, they might smell Guntherâs blood, and wolves did go after injured animals, no matter what kind they were.
âColly, do you see the shelter anywhere?â she asked. âWe could go there.â
âNo!â Gunther said. He spat over the side of the sled. âI cannot take the chance that someone is coming after you. We must go on. It is not much farther.â
âWhat about the open water?â Colly asked.
âWe will try upstream.â
Scooby growled, low and soft, as the wolves howled again. Jaz shivered, but not from cold.
âHike! Gee!â Colly called to the dogs.
Slowly, they traveled along the riverâs edge. Finally Colly stopped the team. âI think we can cross here,â he announced.
âGood,â Gunther said, not looking.
âYou should both get out of the sled, just in case.â
âNo,â Gunther said, still not looking.
âBut we donât know the condition of the ice. What if it isnât safe?â
âNone of this is safe. We are not getting out, and you will get us across. Now!â
âFine,â Colly mumbled. He moved back to the side of the sled, holding the handle, but not climbing on. âHike!â
Jaz held her breath as they started to cross. Before long they were jammed in soft snow. At least it wasnât water.
âIt would be easier if you got out,â Colly grumbled.
âNo,â Gunther said.
âFine,â Colly said again as he rocked the sled back and forth, with the dogs straining to help. Before long they were free.
Woooo!
That was closeâmuch closer than before! The dogs stopped. They were all growling now, sniffing the air.
âI donât like this, Colly!â âI donât like this either, Jaz. Hike! Hike!â He jumped back on the sled, and the dogs leapt forward.
Sploosh! They were in the water and through it again before Jaz had time to think about it. One hard bump of the sled against snow threw them forward. Gunther gruntedâJaz couldnât tell if it was from pain or surpriseâand the sled steadied and carried on. With one final bump, they were across the river.
Wooooo! Woooo!
âGet back to the trail,â Gunther gasped.
âGee! Gee! Hike!â Colly shouted.
Jaz strained to see into the shadows. She was comforted by the dogs. They were running hard, pushed faster by Collyâs calls and by her kissy sounds of encouragement. Surely if the wolves were too close, the dogs would freak.
Beyond the Little Keele River the trail smoothed and became hard and flat. The trees thinned as they climbed, and, thankfully, there were no running wolf shapes among them.
